A Detailed Analysis of WhatsApp Cloud API 2023

In May 2022 Meta CEO Mr Mark Zuckerberg launched WhatsApp Cloud API all over the world by announcing that any business of any size can access WhatsApp for their business communications. WhatsApp Cloud API allows businesses to access all the features of WhatsApp business API through Meta’s WhatsApp cloud API hosted by Meta. Here we are covering all the important details about the cloud version of WhatsApp including what is WhatsApp cloud API, major differences from WhatsApp Business API and how to access WhatsApp Business Cloud API for free.

What is WhatsApp Cloud API?

WhatsApp Cloud API is the cloud version of WhatsApp Business API hosted by Meta which gives all the features of WhatsApp Business API.  This will eliminate the need for an on-premise Business Service Provider hosted server or the business’s own server. This is the major difference between the cloud and non-cloud versions of the WhatsApp Business API, the non-cloud version is called on-premise by Meta.

Initially, Meta offered WhatsApp Business services through a business service provider. But that process was time-consuming and API updates took a while to become available to businesses. Another factor was the fees charged by some of the Business Solution providers were very high and sometimes were not affordable for the businesses. As a solution, Meta introduced WhatsApp Cloud API which is a quicker and most cost-effective way for businesses to start using WhatsApp. Now Meta recommends businesses use the cloud version due to the ease of implementation and maintenance.

Let’s see the major difference between the On-premise and the cloud version of the WhatsApp Business API

On-Premise WhatsApp Business API Vs WhatsApp Business Cloud API

Hosting: One of the important differences is the hosting of the servers. In On-premise API BSPs or individual businesses need to host the API software on their own servers or data centres.  But in the cloud version Meta hosts the API.

Costs: On-premise API and Cloud API differs significantly in their pricing. In both cases, businesses have to pay for the inbound and out messages send and received by them to meta by the pricing rules set by them. But in the case of On-Premise API in addition to the pay-per-message they have to pay the costs of setting up and maintaining their servers.

Maintenance: As the servers are hosted by Meta API software updates are performed by Meta and new features and security updates will get automatically updated. There will be minimal work for the developers like maintenance, scaling work, and code changes.

Message throughput: On-premise message throughput per second will be like the following. 70 text messages/sec for single connect and 250 text messages/ sec for multi connect but these can get affected by media messages. WhatsApp Cloud API differs in this as 500 messages per second combined sending and receiving of text and media messages. It can also be affected by a high system load.

Certificate management: Individual businesses need to manage their certificate authority and webhook CA certificates in case of on-premise API and Meta will manage the CA certificate.
